New Year, New Me, New You

Happy New Year!

After almost a 6-year hiatus, I have decided to try and resuscitate my blog from so many years ago.

A lot can happen in six years.  My sweet little daughter has turned into a teenager and is almost unrecognizable at times.  My sweet toddler boy is starting to require showers on a daily basis because, well, he stinks.  At least he’s not eating me out of house and home.  Yet.

But that’s what happens when kids grow up.  They change.  Usually for the better, thankfully.  It’s a rocky time, though, and it’s by far the most difficult challenge I have faced.  And I’ve managed to throw myself at some new challenges in the last few years, too, including finding a new desire for health and fitness.  In 2013, I started taking a class with some friends to get in better shape and lose weight.  I lost a total of 30 pounds, although since then I have managed to gain back some of that.  Maintaining a workout schedule, as well as the challenge of changing a diet for the better, has proven to be significant challenge for someone who loves junk food and being lazy.

But my road to fitness has led me to new friends and new adventures.  2015, I completed my first Spartan Race – a sprint.  2016, I completed my first Spartan Trifecta – a sprint, a super and a beast.  I also finished two laps of a Warrior Dash and a couple of other Spartan sprints.  My daughter completed her first Spartan Sprint, and my son completed his first Spartan Kids Race.  2017, I have a goal of two trifectas, possibly 3, another Warrior Dash, a Savage Race, and it looks like a Ragnar Trail race.  It’s gonna be a busy year.

Well, hello there!

Hello blogosphere!  I am BACK!  Of course, I don’t know for how long, but I’m here and I’m working on some blog ideas.  I’m thinking I might make this more of a “Homeschool Blog” than a this-is-my-everyday-life-and-thoughts-and-what’s-going-on-with-my-kids kind of blog.  But then, what if I choose to write about the virtues of Captain Mal in the movie, Serenity?  How exactly would that fit in the “homeschool” theme?

I’m just not sure.

But who knows, maybe I’m just typing this to myself and no one is still reading and visiting my blog.  Anyway, if you are still there and still reading, I hope you stick around, at least for a little while.  I promise I’ll write more often than once every four months.

Just a little pinprick

and there you have it.  A flu shot.  It’s nothing, really.  Just a little pinprick.  But will it save you from suffering from the flu for several days?  Most likely.

I got the flu this week.  Influenza A, as a matter of fact.  One of those “seasonal flus” that they vaccinate for every fall.  Did I mention that I failed to get my flu shot last year?  I didn’t?  Well, let me tell you people ~ go get your flu shots!!  Because I didn’t get one and I got the flu instead.

Take the kids, too.  Mine haven’t had theirs yet and I will be taking them soon.  Let me tell you it is NO FUN when you have the flu.

But, I think, I hope, I’m over it.  The cough is lingering but that’s what they do.  At least the body aches and overall crumminess is gone.

But do you know what happens when you’re sick for 4 days in a row?  Nothing.  No laundry, no grocery shopping, no cleaning, no teaching.  Well, some of that isn’t true.  Trey did some laundry, he cooked, took care of the kids and cleaned up a little behind me with a disinfectant spray because, you know, who wants to catch the flu, right?  The first day he went back to work, I did make a very short trip to the store to get milk and a frozen lasagna and I did manage to get two lessons done for Monkey on Tuesday.

Overall, though, not much got done that I normally do so I have a lot of catching up to do.  Laundry, consignment sale clothes, cleaning, disinfecting, teaching, researching lesson plans, trips to the library, blog posts (but these may have to wait a while).

If you don’t see me for a few days, just understand I’m buried under a mountain of stuff.

Go get your flu shot!  You don’t want to be buried either, promise.

Hello, again

I’m here, people.  I’m still trying to catch up with my life because it seems to be racing by me at lightning speed (insert Lightning McQueen image here, “Speed, I am speed!”).  We are in the full swing of homeschool now and I’m still trying to figure out how to juggle that with everything else in my normal day-to-day routine.

I know I’m not the only one.  In fact, a friend of mine told me if I ever figure out how to juggle everything, let her in on the secret.  Believe me, if I get it all figured out, I’ll be getting my patent and trademark all over it, then sell it for a quarter to anyone who wants it.  I imagine even at that price, I’ll make some money because I don’t think anyone has it completely “together”.

But, here are some good things that are happening around here:

Potty Training Power has seemed to do the trick with Little Man’s occasional accidents.  He’s rushing himself off to the bathroom even in the middle of dinner and I haven’t had any messages from his teacher about trouble at preschool (although we are still working on our “number 2’s”).  If you haven’t checked it out yet, I did a review of it a few weeks back.  Click the link and it’ll get you there.  I can say, without hesitation, that this is the best thing going for helping with one of the most frustrating things about parenting.

The homeschooling aspect of our day is going well, so far.  Monkey is blowing through her reading curriculum.  I think we’ll be done by Christmas, if not Thanksgiving.  She’s doing very well in her work; the only problems cropping up are careless errors.  Those were the bane of my existence when I was in school, so I can totally relate to her on that.

Both children started their enrichment/preschool programs a couple of weeks ago and they love it.  Little Man gets upset when it’s time to go home.  He doesn’t want to leave because he’s having so much fun.  Normally, I don’t like it when he pitches a fit, but it’s hard to get frustrated when it’s because he likes his school so much.  Monkey seems to like her enrichment program, although she doesn’t really talk about it much.  At least she isn’t complaining about it.

As for me, it’s nice to be able to claim a few hours a week to myself again.  Although, technically, I’m not really doing things for ME, I’m just doing things like going to the grocery store or Lowe’s without having to bring the children.  If you are a parent, though, you understand the freedom that entails.

We’ve started a few home-improvement type projects, too.  Right now, just simple things like painting the old 70’s style wood trim white and changing out door knobs so they all match.  But new carpet is on the list as well as updating the kitchen cabinets – both of which I think are original to the house (which is more than 30 years old).  I don’t know that we’ll get to them all this year, but in a perfect world….

And lastly, Trey and I get to take a working vacation to… wait for it…. Hawaii!!  He’s working and I’m vacationing.  It’s kindof a short notice thing as we’ll be going next month, but everything has fallen into place to allow this to happen.  I’m so excited!!!

Hopefully, as the routine of life finds it’s groove, I’ll be around more often, but don’t expect too much in the next little while.  I’ll be lucky to have something to post more than once a week, but know that I’m here and I’ll be back as soon as I can take a breath.  Oh and if you’ve left a comment and I haven’t responded, I apologize.  Normally, I try to answer everyone but lately, I just haven’t had the time.  I hope that’ll change, too, as I get used to the routine.

Have a great day!!

Catching up

Yes, I know it’s been quite a while since I posted something.  However, I’ve been a bit busy.  The kids and I went out of town for Easter while Trey’s work sent him to Hawaii (tough bit, that one).  Sunday night, I went to the opening show for The Dead’s summer tour.  It was awesome!!  And this week I’m getting ready for a baby shower for two of my friends that will have about 30 friends coming to my home.

Yeah, it’s a busy few days.

I took lots of pictures and have lots of stories to share about the Dead show to post on my blog, and I promise, I’ll get to it, but really, I have other things I have to get done around the house, first.

I hope you’ll come back!

Sorry, can’t think of a title.

(Sorry about the title, I’m just not that creative tonight)

It’s cold in our house.  Why, you ask?  Because our furnace isn’t on.  It’s not working properly and it’s old and it’s leaking water around the base and carbon monoxide into the house.  So it’s not running tonight.

On a side note, this explains why I’ve been getting terrible headaches and that overall yucky feeling over the last few days.  (No, Daddy, we haven’t had the CO detector plugged in – it’s still in a box somewhere).  I think I’m more sensitive, though, because Trey and the kids haven’t really been effected.  Unless CO makes kids fight with each other and not share and just be all-around normal kids.

As much as it sucks to be cold, today it was actually kinda nice out and it won’t get that cold tonight, so it could be worse.  “That cold” meaning below 35.  Trey brought home a space heater from his work and we’ve been moving it back and forth between all our bedrooms.

So tomorrow we’re getting a brand-spanking-new furnace installed.  That should be fun.  Just in time for winter to be over.  Murphy’s Law really sucks.

We’re done, for now at least, with the kitchen.  If I can keep it straightened up long enough, I’ll take a couple of “after” shots and make a nice pretty post about it.  Of course, now that we have the walls and trim painted, we’re thinking we want to paint the cabinets.  Yeah, that should be fun.

I’m participating in another really big consignment sale coming up next month.  I need to get everything tagged before the 14th so I can order the bar codes.  Because of that, I won’t be around too much in the next couple of weeks.  I have some posts that I’ll hopefully be able to get together and get out, but if I’m not around, it’s not because I don’t love you.

Off to curl up under an old down comforter.  Hope it doesn’t get really cold tonight, like they said it wouldn’t.
